Asbestos – Testing
Asbestos sample testing is a standard practice that helps to identify asbestos products within homes and commercial buildings so that proper abatement and remediation steps can be taken. ASK Environmental provides asbestos testing in Red Deer, Calgary, and the surrounding areas to ensure that occupants are provided with a safe, clean, and risk-free environment in which they can live and work without worry of exposure. To guarantee this clean environment, asbestos sample testing should be conducted prior to construction, renovation, insurance claims, or when buying or selling a property.
Possible Asbestos Materials
In Canada, The Prohibition of Asbestos and Products Containing Asbestos Regulations didn’t go into effect until the end of 1992. However, building products that contain asbestos were used from the 1930s until as late as1990, at which point the majority of these asbestos building materials were banned. Common materials included:
- Caulking (bathroom fixtures, flooring)
- Concrete, plaster, and sheetrock
- Roof shingles or felt
- Siding
- Textured “popcorn” ceilings
- Insulation around electrical wiring
- And more
Materials that were used before 1990 have the potential to contain asbestos and are the reason that asbestos testing is paramount before it is disturbed.
When to Have Asbestos Testing Completed
It can be difficult to tell if you have asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in your home or business without proper asbestos sample testing where materials are analyzed in a lab. Asbestos fibers can be extremely dangerous to your health, so it is always advised to have a professional complete thorough asbestos testing to ensure that nothing is missed. If you’re planning a renovation, you’re looking at purchasing a property, or will be listing your property for sale, asbestos testing can help you eliminate the risk before anyone is exposed.
It should be noted that when contained in materials such as 9×9 vinyl floor tiles, asbestos doesn’t pose an immediate threat. It only becomes dangerous when it is disturbed, cut, ground down, or becomes friable. This is why understanding where asbestos may be hiding in your home is essential so that you don’t accidentally disturb it or cause it to flake apart.
